It's long been recognized that word of mouth is one of the more effective ways to spread the word about a business, product or service. People are more likely to trust a brand that has been recommended to them by someone they know, so it makes sense to aim at encouraging existing customers to let friends know about your business.

The issue most business owners face, however, is finding effective ways to get the word out so it can begin spreading to the right people.

Here are some ways you might begin building buzz about your brand by using word of mouth:


Everyone loves to get something for nothing. Offer a free report that gives prospective customers something of value. They're likely to grab it for themselves initially, but if it truly helps to provide a solution to a problem, or helps to give them some positive tips they can use, they're likely to pass it around to people they know. Be sure you have a link to your website inserted into the footer of each page of the report.

Discount Coupons

Offering discount coupons to existing customers to hand out to people they know can be a great way of encouraging people to tell their friends about your business. Create a way for customers who have already bought your products to access the discount codes so they're able to send them on to others. This can be a great way to increase the word of mouth effect.

Time Sensitive

Nobody likes the idea of missing out on something that is only offered for a limited time. Create a special offer, or a discount, or a package deal that is available for a specific amount of time and let people know about it. Encourage them to let others know about the offer and be sure to reinforce that it's time-sensitive.

Social Media

One of the most effective ways to spread the word about any offer, deal, product, brand or business is to use social media. If you already have a large network of friends or followers, they'll see your message. If the offer you're promoting is of particular interest to them, they'll post that message to their own network of friends or followers, getting the word out even further again.

Going Viral

Creating a buzz using viral marketing can be a little trickier these days than it once was, but it's not impossible. Viral marketing is all about finding a way to get other people to voluntarily spread your message to other people. Free ebooks once offered a great way to turn a marketing campaign viral. These days, however, YouTube videos that are entertaining, funny, strange or otherwise captivating are often spread among friend circles on social networking sites. If your website URL is featured on the video somewhere, people will take notice.

Who's Discussing You?

Plenty of people read blogs to get an idea of what people are talking about within a specific niche. They participate in community forums to connect to like-minded people interested in a particular topic. And they take notice of any product or brand name that pops up in conversation.

Writing a guest post for an established blog within your business's niche can be a fair way to begin a conversation about your product or offer. Once the topic is begun, others may begin to discuss it and word begins to spread.
